  abstract = {{T}he distribution of albacore (#{T}hunnus alalunga$) and the swordfish (#{X}iphias gladius$) is highly related to the sea surface temperatures ({STT}). {I}n order to reduce the cost of searching for fish, a cooperative research program between the {C}entro de {E}studios {E}spaciales ({CEE}), {U}niversidad {C}atolica de {V}alparaiso ({UCV}), and the albacore and swordfish artisanal fishermen of {V}alparaiso was developed in 1986. {T}he program aims to introduce the use of {SST} images obtained by means of {SST} data supplied by the {NOAA} satellite. {P}hase one of this research looked into the use of the satellite images and the relationships between environmental factors and the distribution of these fishes. {T}he second phase, started in 1988, involved the participation of several fishermen along with extension activities such as editing an information bulletin, and training courses. {T}he work has been characterized by a fast technology transfer and the development of a strong relationship between research and extension workers, and the artisanal fishermen.
