  abstract = {{T}he risky nature of navigation conditions, of the reproductive behaviour of fish species and as a result of catches, confers a certain flexibility to the social relationships which are built within the framework of small-scale fishing. {A}n entire part of the coast becomes divided up among family groups, within which parental and affinity become the institutionalised methods of balancing men and resources. {T}he balance between fishermen and the workforce requirements for fishing activities is controlled by a system that is more flexible than the demographic control of the farming community.
