It is therefore certain that the number of family exploitations will rapidly decrease. But the mechanism of succession is very different in each country. This paper aims at providing a method of analysing this problem, by reference to the present situation of Japan. We stress here the nature of the family and the system of fishing rights, which are particular to each country and which strongly influence the succession mechanism.
