  abstract = {{S}ince the war, employment in small-scale fisheries has experienced the same decrease as in the whole of the primary sector, with tendency for stabilisation since the start of the 1980s. {T}he artisanal fisheries in {M}artinique and the trammel-net fleet at {B}oulogne-sur-{M}er (north of {F}rance), demonstrate the main factors underlying changes in employment and their complexity. {T}he most important of these is the trend to increasing productivity produced by the substitution of labour intensive investment by capital intensive investment. {S}econdly, as for all the renewable resources, employment capacities are limited by over exploitation of the fisheries.
