  abstract = {{F}ollowing an outline survey in 1985, {T}he {S}cientific {I}nstitute for {M}arine {F}isheries ({ISPM}) has started a research programme aimed at following the development of the {M}oroccan artisanal fishery. {I}n its first phase, this study seeks to quantify the production (by weight and value) of the fishery, and the effort and cost expended to achieve this. {T}he current economic situation of the sector should thus become apparent. {A}bout a dozen investigators have been located at key points along the {A}tlantic coast. {T}heir results are completed by three-monthly surveys over a wider area. {A}nalysis of the results of this phase will enable (inter alia) the identification of key fish stocks. {T}he most important of these will be selected for biological studies during the second phase, at which time the programme will be extended to include {M}editerranean sites.
