Following an outline survey in 1985, The Scientific Institute for Marine Fisheries (ISPM) has started a research programme aimed at following the development of the Moroccan artisanal fishery. In its first phase, this study seeks to quantify the production (by weight and value) of the fishery, and the effort and cost expended to achieve this. The current economic situation of the sector should thus become apparent. About a dozen investigators have been located at key points along the Atlantic coast. Their results are completed by three-monthly surveys over a wider area. Analysis of the results of this phase will enable (inter alia) the identification of key fish stocks. The most important of these will be selected for biological studies during the second phase, at which time the programme will be extended to include Mediterranean sites. (Résumé d'auteur)
