These problems facing scientists therefore seem unsurmountable : biotope heterogeneity, resource variability, diversity of fishing practices, large number of landing sites and the large area to be covered. The solution adopted in the Niger Central Delta, to obtain the data necessary for the definition of efficient sampling strategy in the shortest time, consisted of a preliminary multidisciplinary survey carried out at two typical times of the year : flood and low water. The statistical conception of the study is presented, together with results obtained in areas such as the type of fishermen and settlements, plus a stratification of the Delta into homogenous zones. These results should allow the adoption of a sampling scheme structured on a multi-dimensional stratification, likely to increase the efficiency and cost-benefit of future investigations.
