  abstract = {{L}a {R}{\'e}union and {M}ayotte {I}slands ({I}ndian {O}cean) are volcanic tropical islands with a narrow continental shelf. {F}isheries resources are somewhat limited and yields are low. {F}or both islands, knowledge of fisheries was scarce until recent statistical studies. {W}ith no organized market, sampling at landing points was the only way to obtain information on the fisheries. {T}his method is expensive, even is employed with limited means, owing to the complexity of the studied population. {A}s multispecies resource estimates appear to be a difficult exercice and a long-term objective, it seems important to focus on ways of sampling fishing effort and fisheries organisation to justify and to make easier resource estimates.
