The aim of this work, based on the results of sociological research carried out in the port area of Martigues (South of France), and for which a few concepts of problematic and methodology are presented, is to establish the criteria which define professional activities in craft fishing and describe their internal differentiation. Three main criteria defining the profession of craft fishermen are proposed : the possession of a profession, the strong territorial attachment of this profession and the strong family attachment to the profession. Following this unifying representation of "craft fishing" drawn up using these criteria, we then go on to describe the clear differentiation into two methods of management : the traditionnal craft management and the modern approach to management. In conclusion we underline the extreme flexibility of these two methods of management, within which may be found both ou-of-date and innovative strategies. (Résumé d'auteur)
