This paper, based on a litterature review and a practical experience, tries to explain the formation of daily increments and annual increments on otoliths. It checks the anomalies which may effect the microstructure and the seasonal growth increments and indicates the main problems encountered in using otoliths to age fish, with interest of tropical reef fishes. Advantages and disadvantages in using daily increments or annual increments are enumerated. The necessity of validation is emphasized and the different techniques of validation are described.
