  abstract = {{P}eople of a number of montagnard lineages in the {N}orthern {M}andara mountains of {C}ameroon say that their ancestors came from a mountain called {N}gol{\'e}l{\'e}, which can be identified as part of the {Z}alideva hills in {N}ortheastern {N}igeria. {T}his has long been recognized for lineages of the {P}lata, {U}rza and {D}umwa groups, but there is evidence that certain {U}ldeme, {M}ora and {P}odokwo lineages also participated. {A} widespread tradition also exists among these groups that, at {N}gol{\'e}l{\'e}, they were part of a community which included the ancestors of the {W}andala, who are {M}uslim plains-dwellers. {I}t is argued that these traditions refer to a period of reduced ethnic tensions, before conversion of part of the population to islam and before intensive occupation of the {M}andara mountains by refugees. {T}he significance of these traditions to linguistic and archaeological reconstructions will be discussed.
