@incollection{fdi:31220, title = {{T}he echinoderms of the soft bottoms of the {S}outh-{W}estern lagoon of {N}ew {C}aledonia}, author = {{R}icher de {F}orges, {B}ertrand and {M}enou, {J}ean-{L}ouis}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} bionomic mapping survey of the soft bottoms of the {S}outh-{W}estern lagoon of {N}ew {C}aledonia was carried out by dredging. {F}rom analysis of the sediments and the fauna and flora found in 489 dredgings, it was possible to define three main benthic communities. {E}chinodermata were found in 37,8 % of the dredges : 22 species of #{E}chinoidea$, 30 #{A}steroidea$ species and 26 species of #{H}olothuroidea$. {C}orrelations existed between the presence of principal species, the mud content of the sediments and the bathymetry. {D}istribution maps are given for the following species. #{L}aganum depresum, {M}aretia planulata, {G}ymnechimus epistichus, {B}rissopsis luzonica, {A}stropecten polyacanthus, {P}entaceraster alveolatus, {E}chinaster luzonicus$ and #{T}amaria fusca$. {S}ome species have very particular ecological requirements, such a #{B}rissopsis luzonica$ which is a mud-dwelling; #{G}ymnechinus epistichus$ and #{M}aretia planulata$ live in sand but dislike mud. {O}ther species such as #{L}aganum depressum$ and #{A}stropecten polyacanthus$, are very ubiquitous and their distribution seems to be unaffected by sediments or depth.
