A model for the entrainment zone of the equatorial turbulent boundary layer is used to compute the turbulent fluxes of buoyancy and momentum and the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy in the pycnocline well below a relatively shallow (order 20 m) quasi-homogeneous surface layer. In the presence of a steady westward wind stress, diurnal variation of the surface buoyancy flux triggers dynamic instabilities that "ripple" downward (order 100 m) during the night into the pycnocline above the undercurrent core, causing a strong diurnal cycle in dissipation and in the depth of penetration of the turbulent fluxes into the upper 100-150 meters of the water column.
