Methods of studying growth in Africa include the analysis of population structure (Petersen method), study of marks on bony parts, tagging, and the study of captive fish ... The phenomenon of interrupted or slowed growth can be correlated with temperature fluctuation, hydrological regime, salinity gradient and/or reproduction, but in most cases, the prime cause is food related. ... Environmental factors may function merely as regulators. Among the growth models employed, that of von Bertalanffy is the most useful, being relatively simple and well adjusted to observed data, although it does not take into account the first steps of growth (larval and juvenile stages). Certain large species have a quasi-linear growth throughout their life (Lates niloticus, some Clarias species, etc.)
