@inproceedings{fdi:010095069, title = {{E}xploring causal relationships between vegetation coverage and the environmental parameter of {B}udyko-type models in the {N}akanbe nested watersheds in {W}est {A}frican {S}ahel [r{\'e}sum{\'e}]}, author = {{G}bohoui, {P}.{Y}. and {F}ow{\'e}, {T}. and {P}aturel, {J}ean-{E}mmanuel and {Y}acouba, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}udyko's conceptual framework is recognized in hydrology for its concise and accurate representation of long-term water and energy balances of watersheds. {B}ased on the climate-environment coevolution, {B}udyko-type models capture the signature of environmental dynamics through climate. {M}any studies have shown a good correlation between the environmental parameter (u) of {B}udyko-type models and the vegetation coverage ({M}), but the analysis of the causal relationships between these two parameters has often received little attention. {I}n this study, {C}onvergent {C}ross {M}apping, a causal discovery method, was applied to identify the causality between u and {M} from seven nested watersheds (areas ranging between 38 and 21,178 km2) of the {N}akanbe {R}iver located in {W}est {A}frican {S}ahel. {T}he {B}udyko-type model developed by {C}hen and {S}ivapalan (2020) was forced with the climate data (precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and actual evapotranspiration) to calculate u values for 11-years moving windows between 1977 and 2018. {T}he vegetation coverage ({M}) was deduced from the {N}ormalized {D}ifference {V}egetation {I}ndex. {T}he results showed causal relationships between vegetation coverage and {B}udyko model parameter (convergence at a positive prediction skill) for all the watersheds. {T}he causal influence detected is reciprocal ({M} influences u, and u influences {M}: {M}?u) for four of the seven watersheds studied. {T}hese results highlighted the existence and reciprocity of climate-environment interactions at different spatial scales.}, keywords = {{SAHEL} ; {NAKANBE} {BASSIN} {VERSANT}}, numero = {}, pages = {{EGU}21--13542 [1 ]}, booktitle = {}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.5194/egusphere-egu21-13542}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010095069}, }
