@article{fdi:010089889, title = {{I}sland colonization and founder effects : the invasion of the {G}uadeloupe islands by ship rats ({R}attus rattus)}, author = {{A}bdelkrim, {J}. and {P}ascal, {M}. and {S}amadi, {S}arah}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he stepwise colonization of islands within an archipelago is typically punctuated by successive founder effects, with each newly founded population being a subsample of the gene pool of the source island. {T}hus, the genetic signature of successive bottlenecks should be detected when analysing the genetic structure between islands of an archipelago. {T}o test this prediction, we investigated introduced ship rat populations, {R}attus rattus ({L}innaeus, 1758), in the {G}uadeloupe {A}rchipelago. {T}hree different methods, commonly named the heterozygosity excess, the mode-shift indicator and the {M} ratio method, were used to detect bottlenecks from genetic data obtained with eight microsatellite markers on {G}uadeloupe and two neighbouring islands, {P}etite-{T}erre and {F}ajou. {M}oreover, a recent eradication failure on {F}ajou allowed us to test the accuracy of the methods in an 'experimental-like' situation. {T}he results indicate that rats were introduced on {G}uadeloupe first, which then became the source population for independent secondary colonization of {F}ajou and {P}etite-{T}erre. {M}oreover, the heterozygosity excess and the mode-shift indicator only detected bottlenecks for the recent colonization of {P}etite-{T}erre and the eradication failure on {F}ajou. {H}owever, bottlenecks were detected for all the populations using the {M} ratio method. {T}his could be interpreted as the remaining signature of the early introduction of the ship rat in the archipelago.}, keywords = {biological invasion ; bottleneck ; eradication management ; founder effect ; islands ; {R}attus rattus ; {GUADELOUPE} ; {FAJOU} ; {PETITE} {TERRE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}olecular {E}cology}, volume = {14}, numero = {10}, pages = {2923--2931}, ISSN = {0962-1083}, year = {2005}, DOI = {10.1111/j.1365-294{X}.2005.02604.x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010089889}, }
