@article{fdi:010089027, title = {{P}revalence of dementia among well-educated old-age pensioners in {P}arakou ({B}enin) in 2014}, author = {{A}doukonou, {T}. and {Y}oro-{Z}ohoun, {I}. and {G}nonlonfoun, {D}.{D}. and {A}moussou, {P}. and {T}akpara, {C}. and {A}gbetou, {M}. and {G}uerchet, {M}a{\¨e}lenn and {P}reux, {P}.{M}. and {H}ouinato, {D}. and {O}uendo, {E}.{M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}ntroduction:{T}he number of people living with dementia is growing worldwide and most rapidly in low- and middle-income countries. {L}ittle is known about dementia in {B}enin. {W}e estimated the prevalence of dementia among retired people in {P}arakou, a northern city in {B}enin, and then assessed associated factors.{M}ethods:{A} cross-sectional study was performed in {P}arakou from {J}uly to {A}ugust 2014. {P}articipants were recruited at 2 centers, the {N}ational {C}enter of {S}ocial {S}ecurity and the {P}ublic {T}reasury of {B}enin. {P}articipants with cognitive impairment were defined as having a low cognitive score (<7) for the brief version of the {C}ommunity {S}creening {I}nterview for {D}ementia and were invited to neurological examination. {DSM}-{IV}-{TR} criteria were used to diagnose dementia and the {HACHINSKI} score was used to differentiate dementia subtypes. {A} logistic regression model was performed to identify factors associated with dementia.{R}esults:{O}verall, 440 retired people were included in the study. {T}hey were mainly male (92.3%) and their mean age was 64.9 +/- 6.0 years. {T}he prevalence of cognitive impairment was 7.7% (95% {CI} 5.2-10.2). {F}ourteen participants were diagnosed with dementia, representing a prevalence of 3.2% (95% {CI} 1.5-4.8). {A}lzheimer disease was the most frequent subtype (64.3%), followed by vascular dementia (21.4%). {R}etired people diagnosed with dementia were all men and were aged between 61 and 71 years. {M}ost of them were living alone. {T}he main factors associated with dementia were older age, low fruit and vegetables consumption, and living alone.{D}iscussion:{T}his study showed a low prevalence of dementia among retired older people in {B}enin. {D}espite this, greater attention must be given to the potential burden dementia places on families for better care, before the expected aging of the population becomes more significant.}, keywords = {{BENIN} ; {PARAKOU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{D}ementia and {G}eriatric {C}ognitive {D}isorders}, volume = {49}, numero = {2}, pages = {210--218}, ISSN = {1420-8008}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1159/000508623}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010089027}, }
