The social study of birth opens up a range of questions on maternity along an axis that runs from private life to the state. The event of birth appears as an experience of the body and the construction of the person and helps to understand maternity in its social, familial, medical, and technological environment. Obstetric practices are therefore embedded in a broad contextual sphere, for which the anthropology of reproduction offers some useful approaches.
