@article{fdi:010088440, title = {{E}nhanced growth rates of the {M}editerranean mussel in a coastal lagoon driven by groudnwater inflow}, author = {{A}ndrisoa, {A}. and {L}artaud, {F}. and {R}odellas, {V}. and {N}eveu, {I}. and {S}tieglitz, {T}homas}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{G}roundwater discharge is today recognized as an important pathway for freshwater, nutrients and other dissolved chemical substances to coastal systems. {W}hile its effect on supporting primary production in coastal ecosystems is increasingly recognized, its impact on growth of animals at higher trophic level (primary and secondary consumers) is less well documented. {H}ere, we investigate the impact of groundwater discharge on the growth of the {M}editerranean mussel ({M}ytilus galloprovincialis) in a coastal lagoon. {G}rowth rates and condition index (tissue weight/shell weight) of mussels growing at groundwater-exposed sites and at a control site in {S}alses-{L}eucate lagoon ({F}rance) were measured. {T}he mussels in this lagoon produce circadian (daily rhythm) growth increments in their shell, as opposed to semi-diurnal increments in tidally influenced systems. {M}ussels from groundwater-influenced sites have higher growth rate and condition index compared to those from a control site. {I}mportantly, growth rates from groundwater-influenced sites are amongst the highest rates reported for the {M}editerranean region (41 ± 9 ?m d?1). {T}he higher growth rates at groundwater- influenced sites are likely a consequence of both the higher winter temperatures of lagoon water as a result of groundwater discharging with relatively constant temperatures, and the groundwater-driven nutrient supply that increase the food availability to support mussel growth. {O}verall, this study demonstrates that groundwater discharge to {M}editerranean lagoons provides favorable environmental conditions for fast growth of mussels of high commercial-quality.}, keywords = {{FRANCE} ; {MEDITERRANEE} ; {SALSES} {LEUCATE} {LAGUNE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}rontiers in {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {6}, numero = {}, pages = {753 [14 ]}, ISSN = {2296-7745}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.3389/fmars.2019.00753}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010088440}, }
