@article{fdi:010086273, title = {{T}he {F}rench public's attitudes to a future {COVID}-19 vaccine : the politicization of a public health issue}, author = {{W}ard, {J}.{K}. and {A}lleaume, {C}. and {P}erreti-{W}atel, {P}. and {S}eror, {V}. and {C}ortaredona, {S}{\'e}bastien and {L}aunay, {O}. and {R}aude, {J}. and {V}erger, {P}. and {B}eck, {F}. and {L}egleye, {S}. and {L}'{H}aridon, {O}. and {G}roupe {C}oconel}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}s {C}ovid-19 spreads across the world, governments turn a hopeful eye towards research and development of a vaccine against this new disease. {B}ut it is one thing to make a vaccine available, and it is quite another to convince the public to take the shot, as the precedent of the 2009 {H}1{N}1 influenza illustrated. {I}n this paper, we present the results of four online surveys conducted in {A}pril 2020 in representative samples of the {F}rench population 18 years of age and over ({N}?=?5018). {T}hese surveys were conducted during a period when the {F}rench population was on lockdown and the daily number of deaths attributed to the virus reached its peak. {W}e found that if a vaccine against the new coronavirus became available, almost a quarter of respondents would not use it. {W}e also found that attitudes to this vaccine were correlated significantly with political partisanship and engagement with the political system. {A}ttitudes towards this future vaccine did not follow the traditional mapping of political attitudes along a {L}eft-{R}ight axis. {T}he rift seems to be between people who feel close to governing parties ({C}entre, {L}eft and {R}ight) on the one hand, and, on the other, people who feel close to {F}ar-{L}eft and {F}ar-{R}ight parties as well as people who do not feel close to any party. {W}e draw on the {F}rench sociological literature on ordinary attitudes to politics to discuss our results as well as the cultural pathways via which political beliefs can affect perceptions of vaccines during the {COVID}-19 pandemic.}, keywords = {{FRANCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}ocial {S}cience and {M}edecine}, volume = {265}, numero = {}, pages = {113414 [6 ]}, ISSN = {0277-9536}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.1016/j.socscimed.2020.113414}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010086273}, }
