@article{fdi:010085835, title = {{I}ntegrating multiple electromagnetic data to map spatiotemporal variability of soil salinity in {K}airouan region, {C}entral {T}unisia}, author = {{B}esma, {Z}. and {W}alter, {C}. and {M}ichot, {D}. and {M}ontoroi, {J}ean-{P}ierre and {H}achicha, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}oil salinization is a major problem affecting soils and threatening agricultural sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions, which makes it necessary to establish an efficient strategy to manage soil salinity and confront economic challenges that arise from it. {S}aline soil recovery involving drainage of shallow saline groundwater and the removal of soil salts by natural rainfall or by irrigation are good strategies for the reclamation of salty soil. {T}o develop suitable management strategies for salty soil reclamation, it is essential to improve soil salinity assessment process/mechanism and to adopt new approaches and techniques. {T}his study mapped a recovered area of 7200 m(2) to assess and verify variations in soil salinity in space and time in {K}airouan region in {C}entral {T}unisia, taking into account the thickness of soil materials. {T}wo electromagnetic conductivity meters ({EM}38 and {EM}31) were used to measure the electrical conductivity of saturated soil-paste extract ({EC}e) and apparent electrical conductivity ({EC}a). {M}ultiple linear regression was established between {EC}e and {EC}a, and it was revealed that {EC}a-{EM}38 is optimal for {EC}e prediction in the surface soils. {S}alinity maps demonstrated that the spatial structure of soil salinity in the region of interest was relatively unchanged but varied temporally. {V}ariation in salinity at the soil surface was greater than that at a depth. {T}hese findings can not only be used to track soil salinity variations and their significance in the field but also help to identify the spatial and temporal features of soil salinity, thus improving the efficiency of soil management.}, keywords = {{TUNISIE} ; {KAIROUAN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}rid {L}and}, volume = {14}, numero = {2}, pages = {186--202}, ISSN = {1674-6767}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1007/s40333-022-0052-6}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010085835}, }
