@article{fdi:010085399, title = {{R}elict lineages with extreme ecology and physiology : metal hyperaccumulation on ultramafic substrates in {N}ew {C}aledonian {A}lseuosmineae ({A}sterales)}, author = {{G}otty, {K}. and {K}ergoat, {G}. {J}. and {J}ouannais, {P}. and {I}nvernon, {V}. and {M}erlot, {S}. and {P}illon, {Y}ohan}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground {R}elict lineages are an important component of biodiversity, but it is unclear under what circumstances these groups persist. {A} potential example of such a group is the {A}lseuosmineae ({A}sterales) of {O}ceania. {T}his clade contains the three small families - {A}lseuosmiaceae, {A}rgophyllaceae and {P}hellinaceae. {T}he clade has highest diversity in {N}ew {C}aledonia, where there are extensive ultramafic substrates, creating an extreme edaphic environment. {A}ims {U}sing several lines of evidence we aimed to show that {A}lseuosmineae qualify as a relict lineage, with specialised adaptations for ultramafic substrates. {M}ethods {M}olecular phylogenetic and dating analyses were carried out on representatives from all {A}lseuosmineae genera. {M}etal concentration in 33 out of 44 {A}lseuosmineae species was measured in herbarium specimens with {X}-ray fluorescence spectrometry. {R}esults {D}ating analyses indicated that {A}lseuosmineae began diversifying about 75-80 million years ago, and had much slower net diversification rates than other {A}sterales groups. {O}ne-third of the species occur on ultramafic substrates in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {S}ix are categorised as nickel hyperaccumulators, and two as manganese hyperaccumulators. {C}onclusions {E}xtinction was probably paramount in the history of {A}lseuosmineae, especially for continental species. {W}e postulate that their adaptation to ultramafic substrates and metal accumulation may have contributed to their survival until today.}, keywords = {{A}ustralia ; island biogeography ; molecular dating ; refugium ; serpentine ; {OCEANIE} ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {AUSTRALIE} ; {NOUVELLE} {ZELANDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}lant {E}cology and {D}iversity}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[16 p.]}, ISSN = {1755-0874}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1080/17550874.2022.2093290}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010085399}, }
