@article{fdi:010084613, title = {{C}ontrasting nickel and manganese accumulation and localization in {N}ew {C}aledonian {C}unoniaceae}, author = {{V}an der {E}nt, {A}. and {P}illon, {Y}ohan and {F}ogliani, {B}. and {G}ei, {V}. and {J}affre, {T}. and {E}rskine, {P}. {D}. and {E}chevarria, {G}. and {S}piers, {K}. {M}. and {P}aul, {A}. {L}. {D}. and {I}snard, {S}andrine}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}urpose {T}he {C}unoniaceae are a major component of the {N}ew {C}aledonian flora with 91 endemic species that are highly unusual in that multiple metals are hyperaccumulated in different species. {T}his makes it an ideal model system for studying the nature of the hyperaccumulation phenomenon. {M}ethods {X}-ray fluorescence spectroscopy ({XRF}) scanning of all herbarium collections of the {C}unoniaceae was undertaken at the {H}erbarium of {N}ew {C}aledonia to reveal incidences of nickel ({N}i) and manganese ({M}n) accumulation. {F}ollowing on, the {M}n hyperaccumulating {P}. reticulata and the {N}i hyperaccumulating {P}. xaragurensis were selected for detailed follow-up investigations using synchrotron-based {X}-ray fluorescence microscopy ({XFM}). {R}esults {T}he systematic {XRF} screening of herbarium specimens showed that numerous species have high foliar {M}n and {N}i with species either accumulating {N}i or {M}n, but not both elements simultaneously. {S}oil 'extractable' {M}n and {N}i concentrations associated with {P}ancheria reticulata and {P}. xaragurensis greatly varies between the species. {T}he {XFM} data shows that {P}. reticulata has a distinctive distribution pattern with {M}n concentrated in large hypodermal cells. {T}his contrasts with {P}. xaragurensis where {N}i was mainly localized in and around the epidermis, and hypodermal cells were not observed. {C}onclusions {M}anganese and {N}i accumulation are differently localized in {P}ancheria species growing on ultramafic soils, which is not explained by contrasting soils conditions, but represents different ecophysiological adaptations.}, keywords = {{C}unoniaceae ; {E}lemental mapping ; {H}yperaccumulator ; {M}anganese ; {N}ickel ; {N}ew {C}aledonia ; {U}ltramafic soils ; {XRF} ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}lant and {S}oil}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[20 ]}, ISSN = {0032-079{X}}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1007/s11104-022-05388-3}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084613}, }
