@article{fdi:010084127, title = {{D}eepwater {H}orizon oil spill impacts on sea turtles could span the {A}tlantic}, author = {{P}utman, {N}.{F}. and {A}breu-{G}robois, {F}.{A}. and {I}turbe-{D}arkistade, {I}. and {P}utman, {E}.{M}. and {R}ichards, {P}.{M}. and {V}erley, {P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e investigated the extent that the 2010 {D}eepwater {H}orizon oil spill potentially affected oceanic-stage sea turtles from populations across the {A}tlantic. {W}ithin an ocean-circulation model, particles were backtracked from the {G}ulf of {M}exico spill site to determine the probability of young turtles arriving in this area from major nesting beaches. {T}he abundance of turtles in the vicinity of the oil spill was derived by forward-tracking particles from focal beaches and integrating population size, oceanic-stage duration and stage-specific survival rates. {S}imulations indicated that 321 401 (66 199-397 864) green ({C}helonia mydas), loggerhead ({C}aretta caretta) and {K}emp's ridley ({L}epidochelys kempii) turtles were likely within the spill site. {T}hese predictions compared favourably with estimates from in-water observations recently made available to the public (though our initial predictions for {K}emp's ridley were substantially lower than in-water estimates, better agreement was obtained with modifications to mimic behaviour of young {K}emp's ridley turtles in the northern {G}ulf). {S}imulations predicted 75.2% (71.9-76.3%) of turtles came from {M}exico, 14.8% (11-18%) from {C}osta {R}ica, 5.9% (4.8-7.9%) from countries in northern {S}outh {A}merica, 3.4% (2.4-3.5%) from the {U}nited {S}tates and 1.6% (0.6-2.0%) from {W}est {A}frican countries. {T}hus, the spill's impacts may extend far beyond the current focus on the northern {G}ulf of {M}exico.}, keywords = {{ATLANTIQUE} ; {MEXIQUE} ; {COSTA} {RICA} ; {ETATS} {UNIS} ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST} ; {GUINEE} {BISSAU} ; {GOLFE} {DU} {MEXIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iology {L}etters}, volume = {11}, numero = {12}, pages = {20150596 [4 ]}, ISSN = {1744-9561}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1098/rsbl.2015.0596}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010084127}, }
