@article{fdi:010083316, title = {{T}he cause of an extremely low salinity anomaly in the {B}ay of {B}engal during 2012 spring}, author = {{L}i, {Z}. {Y}. and {L}ian, {T}. and {Y}ing, {J}. and {Z}hu, {X}. {H}. and {P}apa, {F}abrice and {X}ie, {H}. {W}. and {L}ong, {Y}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}n extremely low salinity anomaly was observed in the {B}ay of {B}engal ({B}o{B}) by various in situ and satellite observations during 2012 spring and ranked as the strongest anomaly in the last two decades. {B}y analyzing various observational and reanalysis datasets, we find that the reversing circulation anomalies caused by a rare co-occurrence of positive {I}ndian {O}cean {D}ipole (p{IOD}) and {L}a {N}ina in 2011 were the main cause of this extreme event. {I}n the fall of 2011, the p{IOD} favored an anticyclonic circulation anomaly flowing from the {B}o{B} into the equatorial {I}ndian {O}cean, whereas the {L}a {N}ina event, which matured in the following winter, sharply reversed the circulation anomaly to a cyclonic pattern. {A}s a result, these reversing circulation anomalies inhibited the southward freshwater transport along the two sides of the {B}o{B} and trapped substantial freshwater to the northern bay by the end of winter. {T}hereafter, the strong seasonal anticyclonic circulation transported this freshwater into the central and southern bay from the northeastern {B}o{B} coastal area, forming the extremely low salinity anomaly during 2012 spring. {T}he key process in forming the extremely low salinity anomaly was the modulation of the seasonal monsoon by interannual processes, specifically the rare combination of p{IOD} and {L}a {N}ina in 2011. {O}ur results highlight the important role of the oceanic circulation in the sea surface salinity ({SSS}) variability in the {B}o{B}. {T}his study provides some new perspectives on the {SSS} interannual variability in the {B}o{B} and the freshwater exchange between the {B}o{B} and {A}rabian {S}ea.}, keywords = {extremely low salinity anomaly ; {B}ay of {B}engal ; {I}ndian {O}cean {D}ipole ; {L}a {N}ina ; freshwater transport ; sea surface salinity ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {BENGALE} {GOLFE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {O}ceans}, volume = {126}, numero = {10}, pages = {e2021{JC}017361 [24 ]}, ISSN = {2169-9275}, year = {2021}, DOI = {10.1029/2021jc017361}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010083316}, }
