@article{fdi:010079496, title = {{L}atitudinal changes in siphonophore assemblages across the {A}tlantic sector of the {S}outhern {O}cean}, author = {{K}uyper, {D}. and {T}hibault, {D}elphine and {G}ibbons, {M}. {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}iphonophores are commonly considered to be useful indicators of water masses and water-mass movement, but their employment as such across the wider {S}outhern {O}cean has not so far been attempted. {W}e redress this here using archived samples, collected during {J}anuary-{F}ebruary 1993 along a transect from {C}ape {T}own to the {S}outh {A}frican {N}ational {A}ntarctic {E}xpedition ({SANAE}) base in {A}ntarctica, and compare the patterns generated with those determined from a prior analysis of whole assemblages at lower taxonomic resolution. {T}wenty-one species were identified from 18 of the original 53 samples collected, and two distinct assemblages were confirmed as separated by the {S}ub-{A}ntarctic {F}ront. {T}hat to the south was characterised by low diversity and high abundance and was dominated by cold-water specialists, whereas that to the north comprised a larger number of subtropical and temperate species at low abundance. {A}ssemblage structure was strongly influenced by the mixed layer depth, sea surface salinity and chlorophyllaconcentration, as well as mesozooplankton biomass. {C}ongruence with the whole-assemblage study was high, indicating that this taxon can be suitably employed as a proxy in studies such as this. {T}he study emphasises the value of archived plankton samples and makes a plea for better curation.}, keywords = {archived plankton samples ; biogeography ; {D}imophyes arctica diversity ; mesozooplankton biomass ; {M}uggiaea bargmannae ; oceanography ; {S}ub-{A}ntarctic {F}ront ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {OCEAN} {AUSTRAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}frican {J}ournal of {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {42}, numero = {2}, pages = {209--219}, ISSN = {1814-232{X}}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.2989/1814232x.2020.1774805}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010079496}, }
