@article{fdi:010078770, title = {"{I} cannot sit here and eat alone when {I} know a fellow {G}hanaian is suffering" : perceptions of food insecurity among {G}hanaian migrants}, author = {{O}sei-{K}wasi, {H}.{A}. and {N}icolaou, {M}. and {P}owell, {K}. and {H}oldsworth, {M}ichelle}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n the {UK}, ethnic minority groups tend to have higher levels of poverty than the white {B}ritish population and therefore may be at high risk of food insecurity. {G}hanaians, living in {G}hana or as migrants are thought to have a high level of social support in their communities, but the role of this resource in relation to food security is unknown. {W}e explored participants' perceptions of social and economic factors influencing food security among {G}hanaian migrants in {G}reater {M}anchester. {P}articipants aged ≥25 years (n = 31) of {G}hanaian ancestry living in {G}reater {M}anchester were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide developed by the researchers. {P}articipants varied in socioeconomic status ({SES}), gender and migration status. {I}nterviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically using a framework approach. {P}articipants offered similar accounts of the social and economic factors influencing food security. {A}ccounts were based on participants' perceptions and/or personal experiences of food insecurity within the community. {P}articipants indicated that they and their fellow {G}hanaians can "manage" even when they described quite challenging food access environments. {T}his has negative implications on their food choices in the {UK}. {P}articipants reported food insecure households may be reluctant to make use of food banks for fear of "gossip" and "pride". {P}aradoxically, this reluctance does not extend to close network. {M}any participants described the church and other social groups as a trusted base in which people operate; support given through these channels is more acceptable than through the "official context". {G}overnment assisted food banks could partner with the social groups within this community given that these are more trusted. {K}eywords: food insecurity; food choice; social networks; {G}hanaians; healthy eating; migrants.}, keywords = {{ROYAUME} {UNI} ; {GHANA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}ppetite}, volume = {140}, numero = {}, pages = {190--196}, ISSN = {0195-6663}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1016/j.appet.2019.05.018}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010078770}, }
