@article{fdi:010078161, title = {{T}ropical cyclone induced wave setup around {N}ew {C}aledonia during {C}yclone {COOK} (2017)}, author = {{J}ullien, {S}. and {A}ucan, {J}er{\^o}me and {L}efevre, {J}{\'e}r{\^o}me and {P}eltier, {A}. and {M}enk{\`e}s, {C}hristophe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}ropical cyclone ({TC})-induced coastal flooding arises from a combination of atmospheric surge, and energetic wave-induced setup. {TC}-generated waves in deep water considerably evolve in shallow water before reaching the coast. {I}slands surrounded by a barrier reef and lagoon are a particular case of steep and irregular bathymetry over which waves undergo various transformations, and induce complex wave-current interactions. {T}he present study investigates the {TC}-induced coastal impact on the reef environment of {N}ew {C}aledonia in the tropical southwest {P}acific. {A}n unstructured wave-current model simulation encompassing {N}ew {C}aledonia and {V}anuatu is used to describe the complete {TC}-induced waves impact, from wave generation to propagation and transformation in the coastal area. {C}omparison with in-situ measurements are performed during cyclone {COOK} in 2017. {T}he results show that coastlines with a double protection (barrier and fringing reefs) are relatively sheltered from the waves induced by {TC}s (significant wave height is 3 m at the coast vs. 13 m offshore) while shores fronting the reef passes are more severely exposed with waves reaching 9 m close to the coast. {S}etups and currents that are associated to wave breaking on the barrier reef induce strong lagoon currents and localized sea level anomalies that does not necessarily reach the coast. {I}n more sheltered bays, wave breaking at the entrance of the bay acts against outgoing currents. {T}his phenomenon leads to an additional elevation of the mean water level in the bay.}, keywords = {{W}ave setup ; tropical cyclone ; wave-induced sea level elevation ; reef ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {PACIFIQUE} {SUD} {OUEST} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {C}oastal {R}esearch}, numero = {95}, pages = {1454--1459}, ISSN = {0749-0208}, year = {2020}, DOI = {10.2112/si95-281.1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010078161}, }
