@article{fdi:010077378, title = {{D}ifferential susceptibility and innate immune response of {A}edes aegypti and {A}edes albopictus to the {H}aitian strain of the {M}ayaro virus}, author = {{D}iop, {F}. and {A}lout, {H}. and {D}iagne, {C}. {T}. and {B}engue, {M}. and {B}aronti, {C}{\'e}cile and {H}amel, {R}odolphe and {T}alignani, {L}. and {L}i{\'e}geois, {F}lorian and {P}ompon, {J}ulien and {V}argas, {R}. {E}. {M}. and {N}ougairede, {A}. and {M}iss{\'e}, {D}oroth{\'e}e}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ayaro ({MAYV}) is an emerging arthropod-borne virus belonging to the {A}lphavirus genus of the {T}ogaviridae family. {A}lthough forest-dwelling {H}aemagogus mosquitoes have been considered as its main vector, the virus has also been detected in circulating {A}edes ssp mosquitoes. {H}ere we assess the susceptibility of {A}edes aegypti and {A}edes albopictus to infection with {MAYV} and their innate immune response at an early stage of infection. {A}edes albopictus was more susceptible to infection with {MAYV} than {A}e. aegypti. {A}nalysis of transcript levels of twenty immunity-related genes by real-time {PCR} in the midgut of both mosquitoes infected with {MAYV} revealed increased expression of several immune genes, including {CLIP}-domain serine proteases, the anti-microbial peptides defensin {A}, {E}, cecropin {E}, and the virus inducible gene. {T}he regulation of certain genes appeared to be {A}edes species-dependent. {I}nfection of {A}e. aegypti with {MAYV} resulted in increased levels of myeloid differentiation2-related lipid recognition protein ({ML}26{A}) transcripts, as compared to {A}e. albopictus. {I}ncreased expression levels of thio-ester-containing protein 22 ({TEP}22) and {N}iemann-{P}ick type {C}1 ({NPC}1) gene transcripts were observed in infected {A}e. albopictus, but not {A}e. aegypti. {T}he differences in these gene expression levels during {MAYV} infection could explain the variation in susceptibility observed in both mosquito species.}, keywords = {arbovirus ; {M}ayaro virus ; {A}edes aegypti ; {A}edes albopictus ; chondrocytes ; {ML}26{A} ; {N}iemann-{P}ick type {C}1 ; {BRESIL} ; {HAITI}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{V}iruses}, volume = {11}, numero = {10}, pages = {art. 924 [11 ]}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.3390/v11100924}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077378}, }
