@article{fdi:010077083, title = {{R}ecent hydrological variability of the {M}oroccan {M}iddle {A}tlas {M}ountains inferred from microscale sedimentological and geochemical analyses of lake sediments}, author = {{J}ouve, {G}. and {V}idal, {L}. and {A}dallal, {R}. and {R}houjjati, {A}. and {B}enkaddour, {A}. and {C}hapron, {E}. and {T}achikawa, {K}. and {B}ard, {E}. and {C}ourp, {T}. and {D}ezileau, {L}. and {H}ebert, {B}. and {R}apuc, {W}. and {S}imonneau, {A}. and {S}onzogni, {C}. and {S}ylvestre, {F}lorence}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}tudy of the hydro-sedimentary dynamics of lakes provides key information on hydrological changes. {I}n this work, we investigate {L}ake {A}zigza in the {M}oroccan {M}iddle {A}tlas, a region that suffers from a scarcity of observational hydrological data necessary for a coherent management of water resources. {S}edimentary deposits of {L}ake {A}zigza (32 degrees 58 ' {N}, 5 degrees 26 ' {W}, 1,550 m above sea level) were dated and analyzed by combining geochemical and mineralogical measurements coupled with microfacies characterization for the last 134 yr. {T}he detrital component derived from {X}-ray fluorescence elemental composition and microstructures analysis of the lake sediments provided proxies of runoff activity and lake-level changes, respectively. {T}hese proxies were calibrated with regional hydro-climatic and instrumental measurements available over the last 50 yr and used to reconstruct past hydrological changes on inter-annual to decadal time scales between 1879 and 2013. {S}ince 1879, lake level and runoff proxies responded in phase to regional inter-annual precipitation variations. {W}e also show that after the major lake-level drop observed in 2008, the response of the runoff proxy to variable precipitation regime is enhanced. {S}uch an approach emphasizes the potential of these hydro-climate-sensitive sedimentary archives to assess the impact of climate change in the {M}editerranean region.}, keywords = {{N}orth {A}frica hydrology ; {M}oroccan {M}iddle {A}tlas ; {L}ake sediments ; {M}icrofacies ; {XRF} ; {R}unoff ; {L}ake level ; {MAROC} ; {MOYEN} {ATLAS} ; {ZONE} {MEDITERRANEENE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Q}uaternary {R}esearch}, volume = {91}, numero = {1}, pages = {414--430}, ISSN = {0033-5894}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1017/qua.2018.94}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010077083}, }
