@article{fdi:010076604, title = {{D}isease specific bacterial communities in a coralline algae of the northwestern {M}editerranean {S}ea : a combined culture dependent and -independent approach}, author = {{Q}u{\'e}r{\'e}, {G}. and {I}ntertaglia, {L}. and {P}ayri, {C}laude and {G}aland, {P}. {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}rustose coralline red algae ({CCA}) are important components of marine ecosystems thriving from tropical waters and up to the poles. {T}hey fulfill important ecological services including framework building and induction of larval settlement. {L}ike other marine organisms, {CCA}s have not been spared by the increase in marine disease outbreaks. {T}he white-band syndrome has been recently observed in corallines from the {M}editerranean {S}ea indicating that the disease threat has extended from tropical to temperate waters. {H}ere, we examined the microbiome and the pathobiome of healthy and diseased {N}eogoniolithon brassica-florida coralline algae in the {M}editerranean {S}ea by combining culture-dependent and -independent approaches. {T}he coralline white-band syndrome was associated with a distinct pathobiome compared to healthy tissues and showed similarities with the white-band syndrome described in the {C}aribbean {S}ea. {A} sequence related to the genus {H}oeflea, order {R}hizobiales, characterized the white-band disease pathobiome described by amplicon sequencing. {N}o representative of this genus was isolated by culture. {W}e, however, successfully isolated an abundant member of the healthy {CCA} microbiome, an {A}lphaproteobateria of the family {R}hodobacteraceae. {I}n conclusion, we did not identify a potential causative agent of the disease, but through the complementarity of culture dependent and independent approaches we characterized the healthy microbiome of the coralline and the possible opportunistic bacteria colonizing diseased tissues.}, keywords = {crustose coralline algae ; disease ; bacterial communities ; pathobiome ; culture ; {NGS} ; {MEDITERRANEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}rontiers in {M}icrobiology}, volume = {10}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 1850 [12 ]}, ISSN = {1664-302{X}}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.3389/fmicb.2019.01850}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076604}, }
