@article{fdi:010076474, title = {{U}pdate of the tsunami catalogue of {N}ew {C}aledonia using a decision table based on seismic data and marigraphic records}, author = {{R}oger, {J}. and {P}elletier, {B}ernard and {A}ucan, {J}er{\^o}me}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{F}ourteen years ago, the 26 {D}ecember 2004 {I}ndian {O}cean tsunami demonstrated the destructional capability of tsunamis to the entire world. {S}ince then, many research programs have been initiated to try to understand the phenomenon and its related hazards better and to improve the early warning systems for exposed coastal populations. {P}acific {I}slands {C}ountries and {T}erritories ({PICTS}) are especially vulnerable to tsunamis. {A}mongst them, {N}ew {C}aledonia is a {F}rench overseas territory located in the {S}outhwest {P}acific and exposed to several tsunami sources. {I}n 2010, a catalogue of tsunamis that were visually observed or measured in {N}ew {C}aledonia was published. {S}ince this first study, several events occurred between 2009 and 2019, and an update of this catalogue was necessary within the framework of a tsunami hazard assessment project in {N}ew {C}aledonia ({TSUCAL}). {T}o complete this catalogue, a decision table has been designed to select potential tsunamigenic events within the {USGS} earthquake database, using criteria on the distance to {N}ew {C}aledonia, the magnitude and the hypocenter depth. {T}hen a cross-comparison between these earthquakes, the {NOAA} {N}ational {G}eophysical {D}ata {C}enter ({NGDC}) tsunami catalogue and local tide gauge records provided 25 events that were recorded in {N}ew {C}aledonia for the period from 30 {S}eptember 2009 to 10 {J}anuary 2019. {T}hese events are added to the 12 events reported with certainty during previous studies, leading to a number of 37 tsunamis triggered by earthquakes reported or recorded in {N}ew {C}aledonia since 1875. {S}ix of them have been identified only thanks to local tide gauges, supporting the fact that instrumental recording of tsunamis is paramount for tsunami hazard studies, from early warning to the validation of coastal models. {I}n addition, unpublished tide gauge data are provided for the 1960 {C}hile tsunami.}, keywords = {{NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}atural {H}azards and {E}arth {S}ystem {S}ciences}, volume = {19}, numero = {7}, pages = {1471--1483}, ISSN = {1561-8633}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.5194/nhess-19-1471-2019}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076474}, }
