@incollection{fdi:010076456, title = {{P}opulation distribution across {A}sia}, author = {{G}uilmoto, {C}hristophe and {O}liveau, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his chapter aims at providing an overview of population distribution in {A}sia at various scales. {A}sia is taken here in the usual {U}nited {N}ations definition, and comprises the 51 countries and territories forming a triangle with the {B}osporus to the west, {J}apan to the north- east and {I}ndonesia to the south- east, as the three corners. {I}t includes {C}hina and {I}ndia, which are the two most populated nations in the world. {W}ith the addition of {I}ndonesia, {P}akistan, {B}angladesh and {J}apan, six out of the ten largest populations are in {A}sia. {W}hile there are a few {A}sian countries with less than a million inhabitants, such as the {M}aldives in the {I}ndian {O}cean and {B}hutan in the {H}imalayas, {A}sia is made up mostly of nations with large populations, and 24 among them have more than 20 million inhabitants. {T}his chapter will examine the main features of the spatial distribution of population in {A}sia, by stressing the geographical and demographic variations observed across the continent, and by presenting some of the main factors that have influenced the settlement patterns observed today. {T}he spatial distribution of {A}sia’s population is particularly skewed in comparison with that of other continents. {W}e will also review the recent population dynamics and see how they are likely to alter the population distribution within {A}sia.}, keywords = {{ASIE}}, booktitle = {{R}outledge handbook of {A}sian demography}, numero = {}, pages = {268--284}, address = {{L}ondres}, publisher = {{R}outledge}, series = {}, year = {2018}, ISBN = {978-0-415-65990-1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076456}, }
