@article{fdi:010076041, title = {{M}etabolomic variability of four macroalgal species of the genus {L}obophora using diverse approaches}, author = {{G}aubert, {J}. and {G}reff, {S}. and {T}homas, {O}. {P}. and {P}ayri, {C}laude}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}mong comparative metabolomic studies used in marine sciences, only few of them are dedicated to macroalgae despite their ecological importance in marine ecosystems. {T}herefore, experimental data are needed to assess the scopes and limitations of different metabolomic techniques applied to macroalgal models. {S}pecies of the genus {L}obophora belong to marine brown algae ({F}amily: {D}ictyotaceae) and are widely distributed, especially in tropical coral reefs. {T}he species richness of this genus has only been unveiled recently and it includes species of diverse morphologies and habitats, with some species interacting with corals. {T}his study aims to assess the potential of different metabolomic fingerprinting approaches in the discrimination of four well known {L}obophora species ({L}. rosacea, {L}. sonderii, {L}. obscura and {L}. monticola). {T}hese species present distinct morphologies and are found in various habitats in the {N}ew {C}aledonian lagoon ({S}outh-{W}estern {P}acific). {W}e compared and combined different untargeted metabolomic techniques: liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry ({LC}-{MS}), nuclear magnetic resonance ({H}-1-{NMR}) and gas chromatography ({GC}-{MS}). {M}etabolomic separations were observed between each {L}obophora species, with significant differences according to the techniques used. {LC}-{MS} was the best approach for metabotype distinction but a combination of approaches was also useful and allowed identification of chemomarkers for some species. {T}hese comparisons provide important data on the use of metabolomic approaches in the {L}obophora genus and will pave the way for further studies on the sources of metabolomic variations for this ecologically important macroalgae.}, keywords = {{L}obophora ; {D}ictyotaceae ; {M}acroalgae ; {M}etabolomic fingerprinting ; {C}omparative approach ; {N}ew {C}aledonia ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}hytochemistry}, volume = {162}, numero = {}, pages = {165--172}, ISSN = {0031-9422}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1016/j.phytochem.2019.03.002}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010076041}, }
