@article{fdi:010075691, title = {{D}ynamics and asexual reproduction of the jellyfish {A}urelia coerulea benthic life stage in the {T}hau lagoon (northwestern {M}editerranean)}, author = {{M}arques, {R}. and {D}arnaude, {A}. {M}. and {S}chiariti, {A}. and {T}remblay, {Y}ann and {M}olinero, {J}. {C}. and {S}oriano, {S}. and {H}atey, {E}. and {C}olantoni, {S}. and {B}onnet, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{F}or many jellyfish, the magnitude and timing of medusae blooms are recognized to result from the benthic stage dynamics. {H}owever, information on the scyphistomae of jellyfish populations in the wild remains scarce. {H}ere, bi-mensual underwater photoquadrat surveys were combined with scyphistomae sampling and observation to describe the annual ({F}ebruary 2017-{J}anuary 2018) benthic stage dynamics and asexual reproduction strategy of {A}urelia coerulea in the {T}hau lagoon (43 degrees 2531.1{N}; 03 degrees 420.9{E}). {O}ur results revealed unexpected seasonal patterns of variation: scyphistoma coverage peaked in the spring (11.6 +/- 3.7% on 21st{A}pril) and was minimal in the summer and autumn (1.4 +/- 1.3% on 10th {O}ctober). {T}he increase in scyphistoma coverage mainly resulted from an intense production of buds between {F}ebruary and {A}pril during the spring rise in water temperature (peak of 12,800 buds m(-2) on 21st{A}pril), but scyphistoma coverage appeared to be negatively influenced by the interaction of high summer temperatures and salinities. {S}trobilation was observed from {N}ovember to {A}pril. {I}t peaked on 17th {N}ovember, with 33.1% of the scyphistomae strobilating and an average production of 19,100 strobila disks m(-2). {H}owever, the low scyphistoma coverage at this time of the year (<2%) likely limited the intensity of ephyrae liberation and the subsequent medusae bloom. {T}he final population size of {A}. coerulea thus results from a complex interaction of abiotic and biotic factors. {O}ur results bring into question how the different populations of {A}urelia spp. will respond to the predicted global warming scenarios.}, keywords = {{MEDITERRANEE} ; {THAU} {ETANG}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {B}iology}, volume = {166}, numero = {6}, pages = {art. 74 [14 p.]}, ISSN = {0025-3162}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1007/s00227-019-3522-4}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075691}, }
