@article{fdi:010075539, title = {{T}he {M}inimum {D}ietary {D}iversity for {W}omen of {R}eproductive {A}ge ({MDD}-{W}) indicator is related to household food insecurity and farm production diversity : evidence from rural {M}ali}, author = {{A}dubra, {L}. and {S}avy, {M}athilde and {F}ortin, {S}onia and {K}ameli, {Y}ves and {K}odjo, {N}. {E}. and {F}ainke, {K}. and {M}ahamadou, {T}. and {L}e {P}ort, {A}. and {M}artin-{P}r{\'e}vel, {Y}ves}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}he popularity of nutrition-sensitive interventions calls for high-quality monitoring and evaluation tools. {I}n this context, the {M}inimum {D}ietary {D}iversity for {W}omen of {R}eproductive {A}ge ({MDD}-{W}), validated as a proxy of micronutrient adequacy, does fill a gap. {H}owever, because it is a newly endorsed indicator, information on its linkages with other dimensions of food and nutrition security is still scarce. {O}bjective: {T}he objective of this study was to investigate whether the {MDD}-{W} is related to household food insecurity and farm production diversity. {M}ethods: {A} cross-sectional survey on a representative sample of 5046 women of reproductive age was conducted in the region of {K}ayes, {M}ali, in 2013. {D}ietary diversity was assessed through qualitative 24-h recall, and {MDD}-{W} was computed. {MDD}-{W} equaled 1 if the women consumed at least 5 different food groups and 0 otherwise. {F}ood insecurity was measured using the {H}ousehold {F}ood {I}nsecurity {A}ccess {S}cale and the {H}ousehold {H}unger {S}cale ({HHS}), and a farm production diversity score ({FPDS}) was calculated based on a count of food crops/livestock groups produced. {L}ogistic regressions were used to assess the relation between {MDD}-{W} and the indicators of household food security. {R}esults: {O}nly 27% of women reached the {MDD}-{W}. {T}hese women consumed animal source foods and/or vitamin {A}-rich vegetables and fruits more frequently than did other women. {W}omen from extremely food insecure households (moderate to severe hunger according to the {HHS}) were less likely to reach the {MDD}-{W} ({OR}: 0.70; 95% {CI}: 0.50, 0.97). {O}ne more group in the {FPDS} increased the odds of attaining the {MDD}-{W} ({OR}: 1.12; 95% {CI}: 1.06, 1.18). {C}onclusion: {I}n the rural region of {K}ayes, {M}ali, women's dietary diversity, as measured by the {MDD}-{W}, was associated with household-level food security indicators. {T}his study was registered at {ISRCTN}. org as {ISRCTN}08435964.}, keywords = {women ; dietary diversity ; nutrition sensitive ; household food security ; farm production diversity ; {W}est {A}frica ; rural ; {MALI}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}urrent {D}evelopments in {N}utrition}, volume = {3}, numero = {3}, pages = {nzz002 [9 p.]}, ISSN = {2475-2991}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1093/cdn/nzz002}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075539}, }
