@article{fdi:010075309, title = {{E}valuation of {F}luoro{P}robe ({R}) performance for the phytoplankton-based assessment of the ecological status of {M}editerranean coastal lagoons}, author = {{G}arrido, {M}. and {C}ecchi, {P}hilippe and {M}alet, {N}. and {B}ec, {B}. and {T}orre, {F}. and {P}asqualini, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {E}uropean {W}ater {F}ramework {D}irective and several other legislations worldwide have selected phytoplankton for monitoring the ecological status of surface waters. {T}his assessment is a complicated task in coastal lagoons due to their intrinsic variability, prompting moves to use real-time measurements. {H}ere, we tested the ability of the submersible spectrofluorometer {F}luoro{P}robe ({R}) to accurately estimate the phytoplankton biomass and to efficiently discriminate spectral groups in {M}editerranean coastal lagoons, by using sub-surface water samples (n=107) collected at {B}iguglia lagoon ({C}orsica) in different environmental situations (salinity and trophic state) from {M}arch 2012 to {D}ecember 2014. {W}e compared the estimates of biomass and phytoplankton group composition obtained with the {F}luoro{P}robe ({R}) (in situ and lab measurements) with the spectrofluorimetrically measured biomass and {HPLC}-derived quantifications of pigment concentrations. {F}luoro{P}robe ({R}) provided good estimates of the total phytoplankton biomass (particularly, the lab measurements). {T}he {F}luoro{P}robe ({R}) data were significantly correlated with the {HPLC} results, except for the in situ measurements of very weak concentrations of blue-green and red algae. {O}ur findings indicate that factory-calibrated {F}luoro{P}robe ({R}) is an efficient and easy-to-use real-time phytoplankton monitoring tool in coastal lagoons, especially as an early warning system for the detection of potentially harmful algal blooms. {P}ractical instructions dedicated to non-specialist field operators are provided. {A} simple and efficient method for discarding in situ measurement outliers is also proposed.}, keywords = {{P}hytoplankton ; {M}onitoring ; {M}editerranean coastal lagoons ; {F}luoro{P}robe({R}) ; {HPLC} ; {MEDITERRANEE} ; {CORSE} ; {BIGUGLIA} {LAGON}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {M}onitoring and {A}ssessment}, volume = {191}, numero = {4}, pages = {art. 204 [17 ]}, ISSN = {0167-6369}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.1007/s10661-019-7349-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075309}, }
