@article{fdi:010075194, title = {{E}valuation of {TAPEER} daily estimates and other {GPM}-era products against dense gauge networks in {W}est {A}frica, analysing ground reference uncertainty}, author = {{G}osset, {M}arielle and {A}lcoba, {M}atias and {R}oca, {R}. and {C}loche, {S}. and {U}rbani, {G}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} series of multi-platform rainfall estimates is evaluated at the daily 1 degrees resolution over three dense rain-gauge networks in {W}est {A}frica, in {N}iger, {B}urkina {F}aso and {B}enin, for the period 2012-2016. {T}he quality of the ground reference, its dependence on the number of gauges and the consequences on the validation are discussed. {T}he primary objective of this work is the evaluation of the newly released {T}ropical {A}nalysis of {P}recipitation with an {E}stimation of {E}rrors ({TAPEER}) daily one-degree rainfall accumulation from the {M}egha-{T}ropiques mission. {S}everal other multi-platform products, {GSMAP}, {CMORPH}, {PERSIANN}, {TMPA} and {IMERG}, are also evaluated over the same area to put {TAPEER} performance into perspective. {F}or each product only the version that uses solely satellite information (no gauge adjustment) is used. {T}he analysis concentrates on the heart of the rainy season in {W}est {A}frica, from {J}une to {S}eptember. {TAPEER} exhibits good skill over the region, with a high correlation and a good reproduction of the frequency distribution of the rain rates, especially in the {S}ahelian region - {N}iger and {B}urkina {F}aso - where the biases are close to zero. {T}he bias is stronger (and negative) in {B}enin. {T}his overall good performance is stable from year to year. {T}he other products exhibit less bias in {B}enin and more in the {S}ahel. {CMORPH} stands out with relatively good correlations, {GSMAP} slightly less and {PERSIANN} has a very strong bias in the {S}ahel. {IMERG}, analysed over a shorter period, is also promising.}, keywords = {observations ; rainfall ; remote sensing ; {NIGER} ; {BURKINA} {FASO} ; {BENIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Q}uarterly {J}ournal of the {R}oyal {M}eteorological {S}ociety}, volume = {144}, numero = {1}, pages = {255--269}, ISSN = {0035-9009}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1002/qj.3335}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010075194}, }
