@article{fdi:010074896, title = {{P}reindustrial control simulations with {H}ad{GEM}3-{GC}3.1 for {CMIP}6}, author = {{M}enary, {M}. {B}. and {K}uhlbrodt, {T}. and {R}idley, {J}. and {A}ndrews, {M}. {B}. and {D}imdore-{M}iles, {O}. {B}. and {D}eshayes, {J}. and {E}ade, {R}. and {G}ray, {L}. and {I}neson, {S}. and {M}ignot, {J}uliette and {R}oberts, {C}. {D}. and {R}obson, {J}. and {W}ood, {R}. {A}. and {X}avier, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}reindustrial control simulations with the third {H}adley {C}entre {G}lobal {E}nvironmental {M}odel, run in the {G}lobal {C}oupled configuration 3.1 of the {M}et {O}ffice {U}nified {M}odel ({H}ad{GEM}3-{GC}3.1) are presented at two resolutions. {T}hese are {N}216{ORCA}025, which has a horizontal resolution of 60 km in the atmosphere and 0.25 degrees in the ocean, and {N}96{ORCA}1, which has a horizontal resolution of 130 km in the atmosphere and 1 degrees in the ocean. {T}he aim of this study is to document the climate variability in these simulations, make comparisons against present-day observations (albeit under different forcing), and discuss differences arising due to resolution. {I}n terms of interannual variability in the leading modes of climate variability the two resolutions behave generally very similarly. {N}otable differences are in the westward extent of {E}l {N}ino and the pattern of {A}tlantic multidecadal variability, in which {N}216{ORCA}025 compares more favorably to observations, and in the {A}ntarctic {C}ircumpolar {C}urrent, which is far too weak in {N}216{ORCA}025. {I}n the {N}orth {A}tlantic region, {N}216{ORCA}025 has a stronger and deeper {A}tlantic {M}eridional {O}verturning {C}irculation, which compares well against observations, and reduced biases in temperature and salinity in the {N}orth {A}tlantic subpolar gyre. {T}hese simulations are being provided to the sixth {C}oupled {M}odel {I}ntercomparison {P}roject ({CMIP}6) and provide a baseline against which further forced experiments may be assessed.}, keywords = {climate modeling ; climate ; resolution ; preindustrial ; {CMIP}6 ; {IPCC} ; {MONDE} ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {ANTARCTIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}dvances in {M}odeling {E}arth {S}ystems}, volume = {10}, numero = {12}, pages = {3049--3075}, ISSN = {1942-2466}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1029/2018ms001495}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010074896}, }
