@article{fdi:010074674, title = {{E}laeis oleifera ({K}unth) {C}ort{\'e}s : a neglected palm from the {E}cuadorian {A}mazon}, author = {{M}ontufar, {R}. and {L}ouise, {C}. and {T}ranbarger, {T}imothy}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}cuador has an outstanding diversity of palm species, some of which have been well studied, certain others remain an enigma, however. {A} particular case is the {A}merican oil palm, {E}laeis oleifera ({K}unth) {C}ort{\'e}s, first recorded in {E}cuador in 1986. {T}he genus {E}laeis has a trans-{A}tlantic ({A}frica-{A}merica) distribution, with {E}. oleifera from the {N}eotropics, and {E}. guineensis {J}acq. from {A}frica. {I}t has been hypothesized that {E}. oleifera derives from populations of {E}. guineensis, which diverged 15 million years ago. {A}t the local level, the populations of {E}. oleifera have a disjunct distribution, with isolated populations in {C}entral {A}merica, the {A}mazonia basin, the {G}uianas, {C}hocó and the {C}aribbean {C}ost of {C}olombia and {V}enezuela, frequently associated with human or archaeological settlements. {D}espite the spatial and historical separation between the two species, there are no reproductive barriers to the generation of fertile hybrids. {T}his important reproductive characteristic has allowed {E}. oleifera to become a major source of genetic variation for the improvement and adaptability of commercial populations of {E}. guineensis throughout the tropics. {T}he {E}cuadorian populations of {E}. oleifera from {T}aisha, with morphological, reproductive and agronomically important biochemical characteristics, have been used for the creation of commercial hybrids, which today are planted in many tropical regions.}, keywords = {{BOTANIQUE} ; {PALMIER} {A} {HUILE} ; {DIVERSITE} {SPECIFIQUE} ; {ESPECE} {TROPICALE} ; {VARIABILITE} {GENETIQUE} ; {CARACTERE} {MORPHOLOGIQUE} ; {PHENOLOGIE} ; {AMELIORATION} {DES} {PLANTES} ; {ETHNOBOTANIQUE} ; {EQUATEUR} ; {AMAZONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}evista {E}cuatoriana de {M}edicina y {C}iencias {B}iologicas}, volume = {28}, numero = {1}, pages = {11--18}, ISSN = {2477-9148}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.26807/remcb.v39i1.584}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010074674}, }
