@article{fdi:010074167, title = {{S}ubsurface fine-scale patterns in an anticyclonic eddy off {C}ap-{V}ert {P}eninsula observed from glider measurements}, author = {{K}olodziejczyk, {N}. and {T}estor, {P}. and {L}azar, {A}. and {E}chevin, {V}incent and {K}rahmann, {G}. and {C}haigneau, {A}lexis and {G}ourcuff, {C}. and {W}ade, {M}. and {F}aye, {S}. and {E}strade, {P}. and {C}apet, {X}. and {M}ortier, {L}. and {B}rehmer, {P}atrice and {S}chutte, {F}. and {K}arstensen, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{G}lider measurements acquired along four transects between {C}ap-{V}ert {P}eninsula and the {C}ape {V}erde archipelago in the eastern tropical {N}orth {A}tlantic during {M}arch-{A}pril 2014 were used to investigate fine-scale stirring in an anticyclonic eddy. {T}he anticyclone was formed near 12 degrees {N} off the continental shelf and propagated northwest toward the {C}ape {V}erde islands. {A}t depth, between 100 and -400m, the isolated anticyclone core contained relatively oxygenated, low-salinity {S}outh {A}tlantic {C}entral {W}ater, while the surrounding water masses were saltier and poorly oxygenated. {T}he dynamical and thermohaline subsurface environment favored the generation of fine-scale horizontal and vertical temperature and salinity structures in and around the core of the anticyclone. {T}hese features exhibited horizontal scales of {O}(10-30km) relatively small with respect to the eddy radius of {O}(150km). {T}he vertical scales of {O}(5-100m) were associated to density-compensated gradient. {S}pectra of salinity and oxygen along isopycnals revealed a slope of around k(-2) in the 10- to 100-km horizontal scale range. {F}urther analyses suggest that the fine-scale structures are likely related to tracer stirring processes. {S}uch mesoscale anticyclonic eddies and the embedded fine-scale tracers in and around them could play a major role in the transport of {S}outh {A}tlantic {C}entral {W}ater masses and ventilation of the {N}orth {A}tlantic {O}xygen {M}inimum {Z}one.}, keywords = {submesoscale ; stirring ; tropical {A}tlantic ; meoscale eddy ; glider ; measurements ; {OMZ} ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {SENEGAL} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {CAP} {VERT} {PENNSULE} ; {CAP} {VERT} {ILES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {O}ceans}, volume = {123}, numero = {9}, pages = {6312--6329}, ISSN = {2169-9275}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1029/2018jc014135}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010074167}, }
