@article{fdi:010074155, title = {{A}brupt increase in the coastal uplift and earthquake rate since similar to 40 ka at the northern {C}hile seismic gap in the {C}entral {A}ndes}, author = {{G}onzalez-{A}lfaro, {J}. and {V}argas, {G}. and {O}rtlieb, {L}uc and {G}onzalez, {G}. and {R}uiz, {S}. and {B}aez, {J}. {C}. and {M}andeng {Y}ogo, {M}agloire and {C}aquineau, {S}andrine and {A}lvarez, {G}. and del {C}ampo, {F}. and del {R}io, {I}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}ver long-term geological scales, the position and vertical movements of the coast are considered to be among the most important effects resulting from first-order plate tectonics interactions in the subduction zones. {H}owever, the relationship between short-term vertical deformation driven by earthquakes and long-term coastal uplift in the {A}ndean subduction contact of northern {C}hile has not been thoroughly elucidated to date. {B}ased on precise radiocarbon dating and geomorphological analysis of littoral deposits in the {M}ejillones {P}eninsula at the southern edge of the major northern {C}hile seismic gap, we report a drastic increase in coastal uplift since marine isotope stage 3 ({MIS} 3) with uplift rates one order of magnitude more rapid than previously in the {L}ate {P}leistocene. {G}eomorphological evidence supplied by {H}olocene littoral deposits and marine terraces shows that this tectonic regime could be operating at present. {T}ogether with new geodetic data following the 2007 {M}w 7.7 {T}ocopilla event, these observations indicate that coastal uplift results from cumulative coseismic vertical displacement with low subsequent interseismic subsidence recovery driven by both deep-moderate and large megathrust earthquakes. {W}e suggest that the accelerated coastal uprising and earthquake rate over the past 44 ka demonstrated in this work results from changes involving the entire subduction contact between the {N}azca and {S}outh {A}merican plates in northern {C}hile.}, keywords = {rapid coastal uplift ; {MIS} 3 ; earthquake geology ; radiocarbon ; northern ; {C}hile megathrust earthquakes ; {CHILI} ; {ANDES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}arth and {P}lanetary {S}cience {L}etters}, volume = {502}, numero = {}, pages = {32--45}, ISSN = {0012-821{X}}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.epsl.2018.08.043}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010074155}, }
