  abstract = {{Z}oanthus is a genus of colonial cnidarians very common in shallow subtropical and tropical rocky and coral reef ecosystems around the world. {S}ome species, such as {Z}oanthus solanderi and {Z}. sociatus, can coexist and cover extensive areas in the subtidal zone of some areas in the {C}aribbean. {W}e report on a {Z}oanthus zone' in {W}estern {A}frica in a bay in the north of {M}aio {I}sland in the {C}abo {V}erde {A}rchipelago, discovered in {O}ctober 2014. {M}olecular analyses showed that the {M}aio {I}sland carpet is formed by {Z}. sociatus and {Z}. solanderi. {S}imilar aggregations have been reported from the other side of the {A}tlantic {O}cean in the {C}aribbean. {T}his work demonstrates the presence of the {Z}oanthus zone' in the {C}entral {E}ast {A}tlantic and adds two new records of {Z}oanthus species in the {C}abo {V}erde {I}slands.},
