@article{fdi:010074005, title = {{C}onstraining magma sources using primitive olivine-hosted melt inclusions from {P}unalica and {S}angay volcanoes ({E}cuador)}, author = {{N}arvaez, {D}. {F}. and {R}ose-{K}oga, {E}. {F}. and {S}amaniego, {P}ablo and {K}oga, {K}. {T}. and {H}idalgo, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}onstraining arc magma sources at continental arc settings is a delicate task, because chemical signatures from crustal processes obscure the slab and mantle signatures. {H}ere, we present major, trace, and volatile element compositions of olivine-hosted melt inclusions ({F}o(82-89)) selected from the most primitive lavas ({M}g# >60) from two {E}cuadorian volcanoes ({P}unalica and {S}angay) situated at the southern termination of the {A}ndean {N}orthern {V}olcanic {Z}one. {M}elt inclusions ({MI}) from {P}unalica are nepheline normative and have basaltic-to-basaltic-andesite compositions (45-56wt% {S}i{O}2) similar to peridotite-derived melts. {S}angay {MI} is also nepheline normative, with high {C}a{O} (up to 16wt% and {C}a{O}/{A}l2{O}3<1) and low silica contents (41.9-44.5wt%) pointing out an amphibole-bearing clinopyroxenite source. {B}oth volcanoes display volatile-rich compositions (up to 6100ppm {C}l, 2200ppm {F}, and 6700ppm {S}). {T}hese {MI} cannot be related to their host lavas by fractional crystallization, implying that they represent true primitive liquids. {T}he source of {P}unalica {MI} was metasomatized by slab-derived melts that imprints its low {B}a/{T}h, {S}r/{T}h, and high {T}h/{L}a (average values of 66, 129, and 0.22, respectively). {O}n the contrary, the slab component added to the source of {S}angay {MI} has a higher {B}a/{T}h, {S}r/{T}h, and low {T}h/{L}a (average values of 261, 517, and 0.11, respectively) which could suggest a relative contribution of aqueous fluids. {T}his dichotomy is related to the presence of the {G}rijalva {F}racture {Z}one that separates a younger and hotter oceanic crust to the north (below {P}unalica) from a colder and older oceanic crust to the south (below {S}angay).}, keywords = {{M}elt inclusions ; {O}livine ; {P}rimary magmas ; {V}olatile elements ; {S}ubduction zone ; {E}cuador ; {EQUATEUR} ; {PUNALICA} {VOLCAN} ; {SANGAY} {VOLCAN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ontributions to {M}ineralogy and {P}etrology}, volume = {173}, numero = {10}, pages = {art. 80 [25 ]}, ISSN = {0010-7999}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1007/s00410-018-1508-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010074005}, }
