@article{fdi:010073720, title = {{H}orizontal gene transfer plays a major role in the pathological convergence of {X}anthomonas lineages on common bean}, author = {{C}hen, {N}. {W}. {G}. and {S}erres-{G}iardi, {L}. and {R}uh, {M}. and {B}riand, {M}. and {B}onneau, {S}. and {D}arrasse, {A}. and {B}arbe, {V}. and {G}agnevin, {L}. and {K}oebnik, {R}alf and {J}acques, {M}. {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {H}ost specialization is a hallmark of numerous plant pathogens including bacteria, fungi, oomycetes and viruses. {Y}et, the molecular and evolutionary bases of host specificity are poorly understood. {I}n some cases, pathological convergence is observed for individuals belonging to distant phylogenetic clades. {T}his is the case for {X}anthomonas strains responsible for common bacterial blight of bean, spread across four genetic lineages. {A}ll the strains from these four lineages converged for pathogenicity on common bean, implying possible gene convergences and/or sharing of a common arsenal of genes conferring the ability to infect common bean. {R}esults: {T}o search for genes involved in common bean specificity, we used a combination of whole-genome analyses without a priori, including a genome scan based on k-mer search. {A}nalysis of 72 genomes from a collection of {X}anthomonas pathovars unveiled 115 genes bearing {DNA} sequences specific to strains responsible for common bacterial blight, including 20 genes located on a plasmid. {O}f these 115 genes, 88 were involved in successive events of horizontal gene transfers among the four genetic lineages, and 44 contained nonsynonymous polymorphisms unique to the causal agents of common bacterial blight. {C}onclusions: {O}ur study revealed that host specificity of common bacterial blight agents is associated with a combination of horizontal transfers of genes, and highlights the role of plasmids in these horizontal transfers.}, keywords = {{X}anthomonas ; {C}ommon bean ; {TAL} effectors ; {H}ost adaptation ; {H}orizontal gene transfer}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{BMC} {G}enomics}, volume = {19}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 606 [20 p.]}, ISSN = {1471-2164}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1186/s12864-018-4975-4}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010073720}, }
