@article{fdi:010073686, title = {{C}omparison of modeling approaches for flood forecasting in the {H}igh {A}tlas {M}ountains of {M}orocco}, author = {{E}l {K}halki, {E}. and {T}ramblay, {Y}ves and {S}aidi, {M}. {E}. and {B}ouvier, {C}hristophe and {H}anich, {L}. and {B}enrhanem, {M}. and {A}laouri, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n the {M}editerranean region, floods are causing extended damages to the population and infrastructures. {I}n {M}orocco, only a few studies have been conducted to understand flood processes while the vulnerability to floods is high. {T}he goals of this study are to compare two modeling approaches for floods using either lumped or spatial rainfall and also to evaluate hydrological forecast capabilities. {T}he {R}heraya research catchment is characterized with steep slopes, altitudes ranging from 1027 to 4167 m, and a strong variability of rainfall. {T}he lumped and distributed models provided similar results and reproduced well a sample of six flood events recorded in 2014. {H}owever, the distributed model provided the best estimation of the initial conditions, estimated from the {ESA}-{CCI} satellite soil moisture product and the {A}ntecedent {P}recipitation {I}ndex. {T}he validation of the lumped and the distributed models, using {ESA}-{CCI} to initialize the models, provides a {N}ash coefficient of 0.61 and 0.63 respectively. {T}hen, two meteorological forecasts provided by the {AROME} and {ALADIN} models were evaluated against observed precipitation to provide a hydrological forecast. {T}he {AROME} forecast performed better but still with a strong bias compared to observed precipitation. {F}urther research is needed to link quantitative precipitation forecasts with hydrological models in this type of catchment.}, keywords = {{F}lood modeling ; {AROME} ; {ALADIN} ; {ESA}-{CCI} ; {R}heraya ; {H}igh {A}tlas ; {M}orocco ; {MAROC} ; {HAUT} {ATLAS}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}rabian {J}ournal of {G}eosciences}, volume = {11}, numero = {15}, pages = {art. 410 [15 p.]}, ISSN = {1866-7511}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1007/s12517-018-3752-7}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010073686}, }
