@article{fdi:010073671, title = {{R}ole of the floodplain lakes in the methylmercury distribution and exchanges with the {A}mazon {R}iver, {B}razil}, author = {{M}aia, {P}. {D}. and {M}aurice, {L}aurence and {T}essier, {E}. and {A}mouroux, {D}. and {C}ossa, {D}. and {M}oreira {T}urcq, {P}atricia and {E}tcheber, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}easonal variability of dissolved and particulate methylmercury ({F}-{M}e{H}g, {P}-{M}e{H}g) concentrations was studied in the waters of the {A}mazon {R}iver and its associated {C}uruai floodplain during hydrological year 2005-2006, to understand the {M}e{H}g exchanges between these aquatic systems. {I}n the oxic white water lakes, with neutral p{H}, high {F}-{M}e{H}g and {P}-{M}e{H}g concentrations were measured during the rising water stage (0.70 +/- 0.37 pmol/{L}, n = 26) and flood peak (14.19 +/- 9.32 pmol/g, n = 7) respectively, when the {A}mazon {R}iver water discharge into the lakes was at its maximum. {T}he lowest mean values were reported during the dry season (0.18 +/- 0.07 pmol/{L} {F}-{M}e{H}g, n = 10 and 1.35 +/- 1.24 pmol/g {P}-{M}e{H}g, n = 8), when water and suspended sediments were outflowing from the lakes into the {R}iver. {I}n these lakes, the {M}e{H}g concentrations were associated to the aluminium and organic carbon/nitrogen changes. {I}n the black water lakes, with acidic p{H} and reducing conditions, elevated {M}e{H}g concentrations were recorded (0.58 +/- 0.32 pmol/{L} {F}-{M}e{H}g, n = 16 and 19.82 +/- 15.13 pmol/g {P}-{M}e{H}g, n = 6), and correlated with the organic carbon and manganese concentrations. {E}levated values of {M}e{H}g partition coefficient (4.87 < {K}-d < 5.08 log ({L}/kg) indicate that {M}e{H}g is mainly transported associated with the particulate phase. {T}he {P}-{M}e{H}g enrichment detected in all lakes suggests autochthonous {M}e{H}g inputs from the sediments into the water column. {T}he {M}e{H}g mass balance showed that the {C}uruai floodplain is not the source of {P}-{M}e{H}g for the {A}mazon {R}iver.}, keywords = {{M}ethylmercury ; {W}ater ; {S}ediment ; {A}mazon {R}iver ; {F}loodplain lakes ; {BRESIL} ; {AMAZONE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {E}nvironmental {S}ciences}, volume = {68}, numero = {}, pages = {24--40}, ISSN = {1001-0742}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jes.2018.02.005}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010073671}, }
