@article{fdi:010073202, title = {{A}dequacy of some locally produced complementary foods marketed in {B}enin, {B}urkina {F}aso, {G}hana, and {S}enegal}, author = {{D}imaria, {S}. {A}. and {S}chwartz, {H}. and {I}card-{V}erni{\`e}re, {C}hrist{\`e}le and {P}icq, {C}hristian and {Z}agre, {N}. {M}. and {M}ouquet {R}ivier, {C}laire}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}dequate complementary foods are needed to help reduce the high prevalence of stunting in children in many {L}ow and {M}iddle {I}ncome {C}ountries ({LMIC}s). {W}e assessed the availability, affordability, and nutrient adequacy of imported and locally produced processed cereal-based blends ({PCBB}s), marketed as complementary food for young children in {B}enin, {B}urkina {F}aso, {G}hana, and {S}enegal. {I}n total, 19 local producers and 275 points of sale in the four countries were surveyed to evaluate the quantities and accessibility of {PCBB}s. {I}n addition, 32 {PCBB}s were analysed for their nutritional composition and packaging information. {T}he results showed that only 7 out of 32 {PCBB}s could be classified as nutritionally satisfactory. {A}ccess to the products was insufficient in all surveyed settings. {A}t the points of sale, the {PCBB} market was dominated by imported products, even though two out of four imported {PCBB}s were not nutritionally satisfactory. {I}mported {PCBB}s were two to three times more expensive than locally produced {PCBB}s. {L}abelling of the {PCBB}s was inadequate in many aspects. {T}echnical support should be offered to local {PCBB} producers to ensure the adequate formulation and supply of an appropriate vitamin and mineral premix. {T}he development of national specific regulations on {PCBB} composition and labelling is strongly recommended in these countries.}, keywords = {processed cereal-based blends ; {W}est-{A}frican countries ; mineral content ; labelling information ; {BENIN} ; {BURKINA} {FASO} ; {GHANA} ; {SENEGAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}utrients}, volume = {10}, numero = {6}, pages = {art. 785 [13 p.]}, ISSN = {2072-6643}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.3390/nu10060785}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010073202}, }
