  abstract = {{W}hile analyzing the fossil diatom flora in one of the longest paleolimnological records (core {PI}-6) from {L}ake {P}eten-{I}tza, lowland {G}uatemala, we encountered {A}ulacoseira {T}hwaites, {C}yclotella ({K}utzing) and {D}iscostella ({C}leve & {G}runow) {H}ouk & {K}lee species appearing successively in the record. {A}mong them, two new species that are assigned to the genus {C}yclotella are described herein. {C}yclotella petenensis sp. nov. is characterised by a coarse striation marked by a shadow line and a tangentially undulate central area with an arc of central fultoportulae. {C}yclotella cassandrae sp. nov. has an elliptically shaped valve, coarse striae and a scattered ring of central fultoportulae in the central area. {C}lassification and differences to similar taxa in the genus {C}yclotella are discussed.},
