@article{fdi:010073048, title = {{C}arbon biogeochemistry and {CO}2 emissions in a human impacted and mangrove dominated tropical estuary ({C}an {G}io, {V}ietnam)}, author = {{D}avid, {F}. and {M}eziane, {T}. and {T}ran-{T}hi, {N}. {T}. and {V}an, {V}. {T}. and {N}guyen, {T}. {N}. and {T}aillardat, {P}. and {M}archand, {C}yril}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he quantitative contribution of tropical estuaries to the atmospheric {CO}2 budget has large uncertainties, both spatially and seasonally. {W}e investigated the seasonal and spatial variations of carbon biogeochemistry downstream of {H}o {C}hi {M}inh {C}ity ({S}outhern {V}ietnam). {W}e sampled four sites distributed from downstream of a highly urbanised watershed through mangroves to the {S}outh {C}hina {S}ea coast during the dry and wet seasons. {M}easured partial pressure of {CO}2 (p{CO}(2)) ranged from 660 to 3000 mu atm during the dry season, and from 740 to 5000 mu atm during the wet season. {H}igh organic load, dissolved oxygen saturation down to 17%, and p{CO}(2) up to 5000 mu atm at the freshwater endmember of the estuary reflected the intense human pressure on this ecosystem. {W}e show that releases from mangrove soils affect the water column p{CO}(2) in this large tropical estuary (similar to 600 m wide and 10-20 m deep). {T}his study is among the few to report direct measurements of both water p{CO}(2) and {CO}2 emissions in a {S}outheast {A}sian tropical estuary located in a highly urbanised watershed. {I}t shows that the contribution of such estuaries may have been previously underestimated, with {CO}2 emissions ranging from 74 to 876 mmol m(-2) day(-1) at low current velocity (< 0.2 m s(-1)). {C}orresponding gas transfer velocities k(600), ranging from 1.7 to 11.0 m day(-1), were about 2 to 4 times of k(600) estimated using published literature equations.}, keywords = {{T}ropical estuary ; {C}arbon speciation ; {T}idal cycle ; {W}ater-air {CO}2 emissions ; {V}ietnam ; {VIET} {NAM} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {CAN} {GIO} ; {SAIGON} {COURS} {D}'{EAU} {BASSIN} ; {DONG} {NAI} {COURS} {D}'{EAU} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iogeochemistry}, volume = {138}, numero = {3}, pages = {261--275}, ISSN = {0168-2563}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1007/s10533-018-0444-z}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010073048}, }
